Patient Testimonial for Unilateral Bipolar Endoscopic Discectomy

Testimonial by Mr. Sunny Savio

L5-S1 PIVD, or L5-S1 Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc with radiculopathy, is a condition where the intervertebral disc between the fifth lumbar vertebra (L5) and the first sacral vertebra (S1) in the lower spine herniates or ruptures, impinging upon the nerve roots exiting the spinal cord at that level. The most common cause is age-related degeneration of the intervertebral disc, which weakens the annulus fibrosus and protrudes the nucleus pulposus. Other contributing factors include repetitive strain injuries, heavy lifting, sudden forceful movements, trauma to the lower back, and genetic predisposition. When the disc herniates, it compresses or irritates the L5 or S1 nerve roots, resulting in radicular pain that radiates down the leg along the path of the affected nerve. Diagnosis involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for visualizing the herniated disc, nerve root compression, and surrounding soft tissues.

L5-S1 PIVD is a nerve damage condition that can be treated with conservative management, including rest, pain medications, and physical therapy. Epidural steroid injections can also be used to reduce inflammation around the nerve root. If conservative measures don’t work or neurological deficits worsen, surgical intervention may be considered. Unilateral bipolar endoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive surgical technique designed to address this condition. This procedure involves a small incision, an endoscope, and specialized instruments to visualize and remove the herniated disc fragment compressing the nerve root. The “unilateral bipolar” aspect refers to the surgical approach and the use of bipolar radiofrequency energy for precise tissue removal and hemostasis. The goal is to decompress the nerve root, relieve radicular pain, and improve neurological function.

Mr. Sunny Savio Asher from the UAE successfully underwent Unilateral Bipolar Endoscopic Discectomy for L5-S1 PIVD at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Badam Kiran K Reddy, Senior Consultant Trauma, Robotic Joint Replacement, Sports Arthroscopy, Ilizarov, Kyphoscoliosis, Endoscopic Spine, and Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon.
