Patient Testimonial for Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy

Testimonial by Mr. Benu Pantha

Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy (PELD) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat herniated discs in the lumbar spine, which can cause lower back pain, leg pain, and numbness or weakness in the legs. The procedure is typically performed when conservative treatments such as physical therapy or medication have failed to provide relief. PELD aims to remove the portion of the herniated disc that is pressing on nearby nerves, relieving pain and improving function. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision in the skin and inserts a thin tube called an endoscope into the spine. Through the endoscope, specialized instruments are used to remove the herniated disc material, allowing the compressed nerve to decompress and heal.

PELD offers several advantages over traditional open surgery for lumbar disc herniation. Firstly, it is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning smaller incisions are made, resulting in less tissue damage, reduced post-operative pain, and faster recovery times. Additionally, because the surgery is performed under local anesthesia, patients may experience fewer complications related to general anesthesia. PELD also allows for direct visualization of the herniated disc and surrounding structures, allowing for precise removal of the herniated material while preserving healthy tissue. Overall, PELD is an effective and minimally invasive option for treating lumbar disc herniation and relieving associated symptoms.

Mr. Benu Pantha from Assam successfully underwent Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy (PELD) at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Bala Raja Sekhar Chandra Yetukuri, Sr. Consultant Neuro & Spine Surgeon.
