What is Robotic Heart Surgery?

Robotic-assisted heart surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that enhances surgical precision through the use of advanced technology. It is employed in patients with heart valve issues, blocked coronary arteries, arrhythmias, heart tumors, and congenital heart defects that have not responded to medication, physical therapy, or traditional therapy.

Heart valve surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG), and heart transplants are some of the heart procedures where robotic technology can help in performing the procedure with high precision.

“If you could choose a surgery that meant less pain, fewer complications, and getting home faster, why wouldn’t you? That’s the promise of robotic heart procedures.”

Robotic-Assisted Heart Procedure: Preparation, Recovery, and Post-Procedure Care

Before the procedure:

  • Before the procedure, along with physical examinations & certain blood tests to assess clotting factors, imaging tests like chest X-rays and CT scans, echocardiograms (valve function, blood flow), and electrocardiograms are performed to assess the heart & lungs for better outcomes.
  • Patients are encouraged to engage in preoperative exercises aimed at enhancing flexibility and strengthening the knee muscles.
  • Additionally, patients should discontinue any medications, including blood thinners, as these can disrupt the procedure. They should also refrain from eating or drinking for a minimum of 8 hours.
  • It is advised to avoid smoking and alcohol consumption leading up to surgery, since they may influence anesthesia and the recovery process.
  • Lastly, discussing any recent or ongoing dental treatments with your doctor is crucial to minimize the risk of post-surgical infections.

During the Procedure:

Initially, anesthesia will be administered to minimize the chances of pain and discomfort during the procedure. The patient will then be connected to a ventilator to assist with breathing throughout the operation by inserting a tube through the throat into the lungs. Next, a small incision will be made in the side of the chest, with these tiny cuts aligned between the ribs. Depending on the heart procedure, a few robotic arms will be inserted through these incisions. For instance, in the CABG robotic procedure, a graft is dissected from the chest (internal mammary artery) through one of the robotic arms. Subsequently, one end of the graft is attached to the coronary artery above the blockage, and the other end is attached just below the blockage and sewn to ensure proper blood flow, thus creating a new pathway for blood flow. Furthermore, a tiny video camera will be placed through one of the incisions to provide a 3D view of the surgical area, including the heart and surrounding tissues. This visual aid assists the surgeon, who operates from a console, in guiding and controlling the robotic arms to perform the surgery with precision.

Recovery after  Robotic Heart Surgery

Although recovery time can vary among individuals, the optimal recovery duration typically ranges from 2 to 4 weeks. Unlike the traditional surgeries that need extended recovery periods, a patient who has had robotic heart surgery might be discharged within 3 to 5 days, leading to shorter hospital stays.

Post-operative Care:

  • Avoid engaging in activities that involve prolonged standing or lifting heavy items that may put stress on your body.
  • Follow the exercises recommended by your physician for better recovery
  • Keep the incision area clean, and contact your doctor if you notice symptoms such as redness, swelling, or drainage from the surgical site.
  • Take the prescribed antibiotics or pain relievers as suggested.
  • Participate in cardiac rehabilitation programs to improve cardiac function.
  • Eat a balanced diet that is low in cholesterol and limit salt intake.
  • Attend follow-up appointments to monitor heart recovery and identify any potential complications.
